One of the items I received in my snack package last week were these Oreo Soft Cookies from Japan. As I have yet to try any cool Japanese treats, I was definitely excited to try this one out. Looking at the package, I couldn’t quite figure out what the flavour of these Oreos were meant to be but image of a glass filled with a light-yellow drink led me to believe they were either going to be banana or mango smoothie or shake flavour.
I’ve noted before that I tend to not spot little details at first and then realize it later as was such with this package that actually shows little bunches of bananas along the bottom, so flavour mystery solved! My sleuth-self did figure that Soft Cookies meant they would be like Oreo Cakesters, meaning two soft cookies surrounding the flavoured filling.
This pack comes with 8 individually-wrapped cookies, presumably to preserve the freshness and softness of each cookie. Opening up a pack, you can smell the fruitiness right away. Taking a bite, it is a strange combination of flavours. The outside dose taste like an Oreo cookie but with less sugar making it almost like more of a dark-chocolate taste and then it’s paired with a light fruity banana flavour.
The filling has that faux-banana flavour, just like the banana-flavoured penicillin medicine I couldn’t continue to have as a kid because I’m allergic. If you like those banana-shaped hard candies that come out of a 25 cent candy machine at the laundromat, then you’ll probably like this cookie. My apologies if that scenario is totally dated.
These Oreo Soft Cookies from Japan are definitely a different flavour experience but really interesting to try. I think the filling would pair a bit better with a Golden Oreo cookie. Taking a look online, Banana Milkshake may have been a limited edition flavour but you can get the Green Tea version from Napa Japan.
