Peaaanut, peanut butter…. and jelly.
This song is from sometime during my childhood. I want to say Barney and Friends? Yeah, that makes sense. Moving on…
Today is National Peanut Butter day in the U.S. and even though I’m Canadian I can equally share the enjoyment of this wonderful nut spread. Peanut butter and jelly go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly and a P.B.& J sandwich was the highlight of many a child’s school lunch.. until the late 90s when everyone became allergic to peanuts. (What is in our drinking water?.. )
I spotted this Hammond’s P.B.& J Sandwich chocolate bar while at Shopper’s Drug Mart and although $2.99 for a small chocolate bar is a bit much in my opinion, I really wanted to try it in the spirit of National Peanut Butter day. This bar was actually named The Most Innovative New Productat last year’s Sweets and Snacks expo, so between that fact and the price, my expectations were high.
The bar consists of 10 squares containing the peanut butter and jelly flavours. Cutting it in half, you can see the jelly on top of the peanut butter. Unwrapped, it smells slightly like raspberry chocolate and upon looking at the ingredients, it is raspberry-flavoured jelly so that makes sense.
Taking a bite, it’s a quick chocolate hit and then you taste the peanut butter right away. It’s pretty salty and I hate to say it tastes a bit more like the store-brand peanut butter as opposed to good ol’ Kraft P.B. (or whatever the best brand is in the States). The raspberry-ness of the jelly isn’t as strong as I thought it would be and the finish is of a very sweet chocolate. You really only taste the jelly if you eat a piece upside down so that the jelly hits your tongue first but even then it’s not overwhelming.
Maybe it’s because I’m used to peanut-butter chocolate either being Reese’s or dipping a chunk of choc into a jar of P.B. (you’ve done it too.. ) but this was a touch disappointing. I think next time a P.B.&J-chocolate combo is calling my name I’ll go D.I.Y. because all of the ingredients are in my cupboard anyhow.
